Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis is a shining example of the “city symphony” film genre. Through a series of images and visual impressions organized into five “acts”, filmmaker Walter Ruttman captures a day in the life of late 1920s Berlin. Ruttman’s footage also serves as a visual archive of pre-World War II Berlin, including imagery of many buildings that were destroyed in the war. Ruttman’s other most notable work was the audio montage Wochenende (Weekend). This groundbreaking work strongly influenced the development of an avant-garde musical subgenre called “musique concrète” and audio plays/radio drama.
