ABBA: THE MOVIE
Director: Lasse Hallström
1977, Sweden/Australia, 96 minutes Thursday,
October 7, 9:30pm, Oak Street Cinema
Friday, October 8, 11:30pm, Oak Street Cinema
Revisit the sweet harmonies and
infectious charms of Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid!
In one of his first films, director Lasse Hallström
(Chocolat, The Shipping News) follows the fun-loving Swedish
pop sensation, ABBA, on an Australian tour at the height
of the group’s success. Great concert performances—including
hits “Take a Chance on Me,” “Fernando,”
“Dancing Queen,” "Mamma Mia" and others—are
intercut with reactions from adoring fans, backstage footage,
and a subplot about a radio disc jockey desperately trying
to catch up to the supergroup for an interview. ABBA: The
Movie is rarely screened and not available on home video.
Don't miss the insanely catchy music, outrageous stage costumes,
and, according to 1977 press, the "sexiest bottom in
Europe"! |

THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT
Director: Cory McAbee
2001, US, 91 minutes Wednesday,
October 6, 7:30pm, Oak Street Cinema
Cory McAbee of San Francisco-based
band, The Billy Nayer Show, takes us on an unbelievable
intergalactic journey with this idiosyncratic space western
musical. McAbee wrote and directed the film, and also stars
as space trader, Samuel Curtis. Touching down on an asteroid
belt near Saturn, Curtis discovers an all-male culture driven
by song, dance, and the loneliness of the most remote prairie.
There, the Blueberry Pirate presents him with a scheme to
trade live commodities between the all-male worker planet
of Jupiter and all-female planet of Venus. Along his journey,
he discovers he is being pursued by the enigmatic Professor
Hess. With velvety black-and-white photography, ingenious
lo-fi sets, and phenomenal music from the Nayers, the film
is a brilliant oddity of American indie filmmaking.

Saturday, October 9, 3:15pm, Oak Street Cinema
British director Simon Pummell
uses creative media archeology to explore the universal
human experience. Bodysong is an epic story of love, sex,
violence, death and dreams told entirely through archival
footage from around the world and across 100 years of cinema
history. Powerful imagery from a wide variety of silent
films, newsreels, documentaries, and home movies is accompanied
by a beautiful and hypnotic musical score by Radiohead's
Jonny Greenwood. The result is a truly unique experience
in music and moving image. The Bodysong project also includes
a website (www.bodysong.com) which explores the stories
behind each of the extraordinary images in the film. |

Beginning in the late 1960s, German
band, Can, blended influences of neoclassical, free jazz,
and gypsy music with driving funk rhythms, rock guitar,
and synthesizers. Their hypnotic, psychedelic music would
come to define Krautrock in the 1970s and influence such
groups as Talking Heads and Sonic Youth. We are pleased
to present encore screenings of two films celebrating the
influential band. CAN: The Documentary traces their career
with interviews and an abundance of rare archival film and
TV performance footage. CAN: Free Concert captures the band
in a 1972 concert in Cologne and in their own Inner Space
Studio. There will be a brief intermission between films.

CHUCK STATLER: A RETROSPECTIVE
Presented
by Chuck Statler
1977-2004, US, 93 min Monday,
October 4, 7:00pm, Oak Street Cinema
Special Ticket Price $8
Sound Unseen is proud to present
the work of contemporary rock video pioneer and Minneapolitan
Chuck Statler. The man who some consider the inventor of
the music video, Chuck was among the last filmmakers of
music film clips before video killed the music film clip
star. It was while attending Kent State in Ohio that Chuck
met and collaborated with Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerry Casale,
the nucleus of DEVO. Their film collaborations became a
hallmark of DEVO’s act, and soon Stiff, ZE, and other
upstart record labels commissioned Chuck to produce films
for their talent. Chuck’s collaborations have spanned
decades and included icons of each one - from Prince to
The Cars, J. Geils to Styx. Tonight Chuck presents rare
16mm screenings of Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Madness
and DEVO, as well as videos with Pere Ubu, El Vez, Moldy
Peaches, Stan Ridgway, the last filmed appearance by Tiny
Tim, and selections from his most recent project, ‘Sonic
Burlesque.’ |

SPECIAL
EVENT!
DBR w/ DJ SCIENTIFIC Thursday,
October 7, 10:00pm, Kitty Cat Klub
Special Ticket Price $6
Some people describe him as “Beethoven
meets Lenny Kravitz.” Others simply call him DBR.
An African-American composer/musician of Haitian descent,
Daniel Bernard Roumain seamlessly blends funk, rock, hip-hop
and classical to create music that is “far out and
creative in another world”. He has recently collaborated
with DJ Spooky, Cassandra Wilson, Bill T. Jones, Vernon
Reid and Susan Sarandon, and was rated #3 in New York Times’
Top 10 Classical moments of 2003. Roumain’s works
have been commissioned by orchestras around the world and
he tours frequently with his 9-piece ensemble, DBR’s
MISSION. In February 2004, nearly 2000 people attended the
premiere of ROCKESTRA: A Hip-Hop Music and Dance Party,
at Arizona State University's Gammage Auditorium featuring
DJ Radar and sponsored by the American Express Beyond Broadway
Series. Come and see for yourself what the critics are raving
about at this rare live performance at one of our favorite

DBR FREE WORKSHOP
COMPOSITIONS, INSTRUMENTS & SOFTWARE
Friday, October 8, 5:00-7:00pm,
Institute for Production & Recording
Free and open to all ages!
Composer/musician DBR, whose dynamic
fusion of funk, rock, hip-hop and classical has “people
likening him simultaneously to Mozart and Prince”
(LA Times) teams up with engineer/producer/turntablist DJ
Scientific to reveal the compositional process, from idea,
to pre-production, to performance, and how the integration
of electronic software and instruments can result in musical
collaborations that are timely, relevant, and alive. Using
a G4 Apple Macintosh laptop, three software programs in
Pro-Tools, Reason, Live, and electric/acoustic Violins in
live performance, DBR and DJ Scientific create musical soundscapes
that are dense, vibrant, and integrate the latest technology
with an age-old instrument. The workshop will focus on the
work of a DJ, collaborating with an electric/acoustic violinist
and laptopist, and how software, primarily used for sequencing,
editing, and mastering, can in fact be used in a fluid,
spontaneous, and live environment.

“Electronic alchemy sound, amp/fx worship, intoxicated
by ritual, rising patterns of incense smoke shot through
with unwavering electric white light, the swung, feeding-back
microphone is our censor. We take the pure white light and
reflect / refract / multiply it with mirrors and colored
scarves, to construct an imaginary space of sound and light,
we gaze inward and project outward”.
SAMARA LUBELSKI
Although Samara’s presence
in the psychedelic / folk scene of the last ten years hasn’t
necessarily been widely stated, it’s been solidly
felt - not only through her solo recordings, but also through
her work with Metabolismus, Tower Recordings and Hall of
Fame, she has proved to be widely diverse. Samara has learned
not only the tricks of the sound engineering art, but processed
the indifferent and oblivious crowd knocks that seem to
give birth to great songs. Through her solo works she has
learned her own voice, with themes that evoke similarities
as divergent as La Monte Young (spiritual) Judy Henske (husk)
or Margo Guryan (civility). Her voice is like a huge bird,
a nymphy Joni Mitchell on a mad dash to and from nowhere.
CHARLIE NOTHING
Charlie Nothing is the Ding
of Rock and Roll. His art spans a wide range, the pinnacle
being the guitar sculptures he makes out of American Cars.
Dingulators™ is what he calls them.. Dingulators™
are the ultimate rock and roll art. Charlie Nothing has
performed in many places and many times, one of his LPs
"In Eternity With Brother Fred" was produced by
the then prestigious Takoma Records and achieved a degree
of infamy in Europe under the category of New Jazz, which,
of course, it was not. Charlie Nothing evolved past the
entertaining-monkey-jumping-up-and-down-on-stage stage and
quit performing entirely, making this a very special night. |

The troubled story of 70s all-girl
teenage rock band, The Runaways, is explored in this personal
documentary directed by band member Vicki Blue. Candid interviews

and abuse from managers and fights between bandmates. Including
rare footage and insightful recollections from Kari Chrome,
Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Jackie Fox, Kim Fowley,
and Suzi Quatro, Edgeplay is an incredibly honest and raw
look at what a group of young teenaged girls went through
for their dreams of rock stardom.

OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON
Director: Elina Shatkin
2004, US, 45 minutes
Tuesday, October 5, 9:30pm, Bryant Lake
Bowl
Thursday, October 7, 6:30pm, Bryant Lake Bowl
Hailed by critics as one of the
great singer/songwriters of his generation, Elliott Smith
built his musical reputation not only with his haunting
recordings but also with his uniquely intimate live performances.
Director Elina Shatkin (Try This At Home) captured his solo
set on the closing night of the five-day Yoyo A Go Go festival
in 1999 in which Elliott played twelve songs ranging from
old favorites to new material. Uncut and presented in its
entirety, this document provides a rare close-up view of
the extraordinarily talented musician. Less than a year
before his major label debut and the formation of a backing
band, this was one of the last shows to feature Elliott
alone on stage. An additional short film will also be shown. |

FUNKYTOWN
Director: Steven Greenberg
1998, US, 88 min.
Tuesday, October 5, 7:00pm, Bryant Lake
Bowl – DIRECTOR PRESENT!
Life with aspiring rock stars
and the harsh reality of the music business is well documented
in this Minnesota-made film. A musician is brutally murdered,
a group breaks up the day they were to sign a lucrative
recording contract, throat surgery threatens a lead singer’s
voice, and a key member of a band is asked to leave in a
proverbial him or me scenario. FUNKYTOWN is a rockumentary
about five, hard working Minnesota bands trying to make
it in the real world and it ain’t easy. Directed by
Minneapolitan Steven Greenberg, the man behind the 1980
No.1 hit song “Funkytown,” the film captures
the roller coaster ride of the musician’s struggle
to make a name for themselves and attempting to get anything
happening that could translate into creative freedom or
financial success.

Ms. Nelson in the 60s, his darker and farther out 70s recordings,

powerful and recognizable voices in all of music. Best known
for his many hits at Chess Records ("Smokestack Lightning,"

Irwin Chusid's
VIDEO THRIFT SHOP Presented
by Irwin Chusid Wednesday, October
6, 7:00pm, Bryant Lake Bowl
Our favorite oddball archaeologist,
Irwin Chusid, brings a free-form mix of visual musical bric-a-brac
to SU this year. The Hoboken-based WFMU radio personality,
author (Songs in the Key of Z), producer, and music historian
presents a one-night "video vaudeville" mix. We'll
see rare archival clips, outsider and incorrect music favorites,
and all manner of head-scratching and eye-popping marginalia.
The program includes Raymond Scott; Esquivel; authentic
vaudevillians of the 1920s; William Shatner's 1974 melodramatic
interpretation of "Taxi"; a futuristic 1930s cartoon;
Brian and Ted Dewan's 2003 satirical take on the history
of the organ; and harpist/singer Joanna Newsom. Recommended
for those with eclectic musical tastes and short attention

Director: Chad Freidrichs
2003, US, 88 minutes
Sunday, October 3, 3:00pm, Oak Street
Cinema
A cult hero to deejays and record
collectors, enigmatic musician Jandek has released 34 self-recorded
albums over the past 25 years. His music has influenced
Kurt Cobain, Thurston Moore, Beck, and countless other artists.
But he has never performed live or given out any biographical
information. All that is known about Jandek is what can
be derived from his atmospheric music, haunting lyrics,
odd album cover photos, and minimal communications via a
Houston P.O. box. Even his real name is a mystery. Jandek
On Corwood pieces together the music and images with various
impressions of the man/myth for an intriguing portrait. |

| JANIS FIGURE: FRANKLY, SERIOUSLY,
HONESTLY
Director: Chris Coyne
2003, US, 40 min.
Monday, October 4, 6:30pm, Bryant Lake
Bowl – DIRECTOR PRESENT!
Special Ticket Price $3
The courage, character and drama
of the independent rock band is captured in all its folly
in this exclusive documentary by Minneapolis rock band,
Janis Figure. Veteran film and TV actor Chris Mulkey (Twin
Peaks, Radio) plays host and narrator to a novel set-up
of real-life footage of the band as they tour the country
to court a record contract, as well as reenactments of hilarious
anecdotes not captured on film. Watch the band encounter
an oddball, eccentric mixture of Americana in cities throughout
the U.S. and Canada. There’s a man with elephantitus
startling the band in Texas; the guitar player’s eye-opening
encounter with a urine-therapy advocate; the lead singer’s
perilous “meeting” in a motel with an over-zealous
promoter, and an undependable tour bus that is forever finding
new ways to break down. Musicians and music fans alike will
sympathize with this earnest, sincere look inside life on
the road with a band that works for no one but themselves
to reach the American rock dream. |

Let's rock again!
Director: Dick Rude
US, 2004, 67 min.
Monday, October 4, 9:30pm, Oak Street
Cinema - DIRECTOR PRESENT
This documentary follows rock
icon Joe Strummer as he tours America and Japan in hopes
of making a rock n' roll comeback with his new band, the
Mescaleros. Strummer's main objective is simple - to get
his music out to the people and break his record so that
he can have another chance to rock again. We ride along
with Joe to photo shoots, magazine interviews and press
appearances, and even see him handing out flyers on the
boardwalks of Atlantic city to oblivious passers-by. Live
performances feature songs from the Clash as well as new
material. What makes this documentary extra special is the
peak into Joe's daily life, hanging out with celebs backstage,
spending time with fans and even a live studio recording.
This intimate portrait captures Joe as a genuine, hard working
man, whose passion and effort make him the true hero that
he is. Let's Rock Again! was produced by Strummer and Dick
Rude, a long time friend who also directed. Strummer's cooperation
and comfort with Rude opened the door to an exclusive view
of the legendary man never before seen. In 2002, the world
lost Joe to a congential hear condition and Let's Rock Again!
is his final message, a story about never giving up.
Filmmaker, Dick Rude, has had an extensive film career,
starring in several films including "Sid and Nancy", "The
Wild Life" and "Repo Man," and also co-wrote and starred
in "Straight to Hell" which features Dennis Hopper, Courtney
Love and Elvis Costello. His other writing credits include
a pilot for Sophia Coppola, "Hi Octane" and an un-produced
script commissioned by River Phoenix. As a director, Rude
has made many music videos, inluding "Nothing Something"
for Blonde Redhead and "Off the Map" for the Red Hot Chili
Peppers. Rude is currently preparing his next film "The
Asshole" with his friend and Executive Producer Jim Jarmusch.

Main – PRODUCER PRESENT
In September of 1979, the
Walker Art Center produced a "New-No-Now-Wave Festival"
in Minneapolis. Two days of No/New wave music, the likes
of which had never been seen before. Featuring music by
the Fleshtones, the Monochrome Set, Tuxedomoon, the Suburbs,
Dark Day, James Chance and the Contortions, Judy Nylon and
a host of others. This is a concert film of New Wave in
it's infancy, before MTV. Stylish, yet raw, this captures
the moment before it happened. The footage was lost in a
morass of girlfriend's closets for 24 years, now lovingly
restored to its vivid black and white glory.

FEATURING SPECIAL GUEST ANDY FRIEDMAN
AMERICANA SLIDESHOW POET
A self-described "painter
with lyrics," maverick Brooklyn-based visual artist
Andy Friedman and his one-man show brings together projections
of his pencil drawings, paintings and photographs with a
series of monologues and poetry. The artist's "barfly-boho-bluesman"
persona coupled with his engaging, straightforward delivery
has hushed rowdy taverns, charmed music, art, theater, and
literary audiences and earns him a considerably growing
national following. The NEW YORKER calls Friedman "a
master of the slide projector, not the slide guitar…elevating
the interstitial ramblings of a wayward folk musician into
an art form."
VISIBLE BEAT
Conceived and performed by
MCAD students, Visible Beat presents a spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment
relay between two ‘teams’—audio and visual.
Students will be creating, collecting, and compiling a catalog
of samples about energy that will serve as content for this
interactive performance. A sort of new media “battle,”
Visible Beat will assault the senses—a sonic, visual
collage based on instantaneous call and response.
24-HOUR FILM CHALLENGE SHOWCASE
During 24 crazy consecutive
hours, student film crews from area colleges created 3-4
minute films incorporating sonic elements inspired by the
same catalyst key words driving Visible Beat. These films
will be showcased before, between, and after the above performances.
Winners announced at the event!

covers for Sonic Youth, Beck, and the Beastie Boys. He has
shown his artwork in galleries in Tokyo and New York. And

| OFF THE CHARTS:
THE SONG-POEM STORY
Director: Jamie Meltzer
2002, US, 63 minutes
Wednesday, October 6, 9:30pm, Bryant
Lake Bowl
"Your Poetry Set to Music!"
"Songs into dollars!" Off The Charts documents
the “song-poem” phenomenon in which ordinary
folks send their heartfelt and often bizarre lyrics to companies
advertising in the back of tabloids, which, for a fee, turn
their poems into records. This unusual pen pal collaboration
of amateur songwriters and studio musicians has produced
such oddities as 'I Am a Ginseng Digger', 'Jimmy Carter
Says Yes', and 'A Blind Man's Penis.' We are introduced
to some of the quirky writers, the producers and studio
musicians who crank the songs out, and aficionados of the
records, including Tom Ardolino of the band NRBQ and Ellery
Eskelin, son of the great song-poem stylist Rodney Keith
Eskelin.

| PAUL WESTERBERG:
COME FEEL ME TREMBLE
Directors: Rick Fuller & Otto
Zithromax
2003, US, 88 min
Thursday, October 7, 7:15, St. Anthony
Main – DIRECTOR PRESENT
"Look me in the eye".
Paul Westerberg has been issuing this unsettling public
challenge for the better part of twenty-five years and still
everyone blinks. He has always been particularly adept at
exercising the peculiar skill of keeping people at arm's
length even as he invites them into his world. His ragged,
enigmatic persona has been reinvented a number of times
since the heyday of the Replacements and the scraps and
shreds he does deign to toss about speak volumes. Putting
those pieces together definitively is a gloriously complex
project. Come Feel Me Tremble admirably builds on that work-in-progress
with interview snippets, intimate performance footage shot
by fans in a variety of venues, and material provided by
Paul himself. As wild and mercurial as he was with his former
band, Westerberg is now even more the trickster troubadour,
his oddball passion shining through even the most uncomfortable
moments. See what a pleasure it is to meet him again for
the first time.

| PRIVILEGE
Director: Peter Watkins
1967, UK, 103 minutes
Saturday, October 2, 7:30pm, Oak Street
Cinema
Sunday, October 2, 5:00pm, Oak Street Cinema
"Behind the screams and headlines
are the manipulators... the puppet masters who pull the
strings and make the pop scene work."
This often overlooked, late-60s
oddity from director Peter Watkins is a striking (and all-too-prophetic)
allegory for mass media and popular culture being used to
channel and control the impulses of young people. Privilege
stars Paul Jones (of Manfred Mann) as a pop singer in a
future society where entertainment is controlled by a totalitarian
government. The star's influence is used to divert political
challenge and sell just about every commodity imaginable.
The church wants him to change his image to that of an obedient,
religious boy, but he's met a young artist (played by model
Jean Shrimpton) who convinces him to rebel against the forces
controlling their lives. Privilege is rarely screened and
not available on home video– so don't miss it! |

The ukulele is more than a tiny
musical instrument. It's a state of mind! Rock That Uke
is a love letter to the four-stringed underdog of the musical

of alternative, post-punk musicians who have taken up the
instrument. We meet Indie rockers, comedy acts, ragtime
bands, heavy metal band Uke Til U Puke, Oliver Brown, Casey
Korder, and many others. Narrated by Holly Hunter (whom

2003, Finland/Denmark, 76 minutes
Sunday, October 3, 7:30pm, St. Anthony
Main
Wednesday, October 6, 5:30pm, St. Anthony Main
There's no sound quite like 30
Finnish men screaming at the top of their lungs! Under the
impassioned and strict leadership of Petri Servio, the unusual
men's choir, 'Mieskuoro Huutajat,' dresses in black suits
and rubber ties and belts out high-decibel renditions of
everything from children's songs to national anthems. In
Screaming Men, director and former choir member Mika Ronkainen
beautifully documents the group's unusual audition process
and performances over the past 5 years in Finland, Iceland,
France, and Japan. This oddball movie from the documentary
arm of Lars Von Treir's Zentropa Productions walks the thin
line between the dead serious and the completely absurd. |

| UNKNOWN PASSAGE:
THE DEAD MOON STORY
Directors: Kate Fix and Jason Summers
2004, US, 88 minutes
Tuesday, October 5, 7:15pm, St. Anthony
Main
Unknown Passage is a loving documentary
tribute to Northwest band Dead Moon. The film begins by
tracing founder Fred Cole’s roots in the 60s when
he performed psychedelic garage rock in The Lollipop Shoppe
and intersected with the likes of Janis Joplin, the Yardbirds,
The Doors, Moby Grape, and the Seeds. Fred added his wife,
Toody, on bass when he got tired of flaky band members.
In the 80s, the pair recruited drummer Andrew Loomis and
formed Dead Moon. Fiercely independent, they distribute
and even press their own records, run a thriving guitar
shop, and still manage to get out on the road and play for
devoted fans worldwide. |

| YOU THINK YOU
REALLY KNOW ME: THE GARY WILSON STORY
Director: Michael Wolk
2003, US, 74 minutes
Saturday, October 2, 7:45pm, St. Anthony
Main
Gary Wilson recorded the strangely
brilliant 1977 album 'You Think You Know Me' in the basement
of his parents' home when he was 24. With its talk-sung,
angst-ridden and horny lyrics and music combining elements
of avant-garde jazz, lounge soul, and synthesized pop-rock,
the recording has become legendary among record collectors
and gained fans in the likes of Matt Groening, Husker Du,
the Replacements, and Beck. This new documentary uncovers
the unbelievable story of this unique musician, from his
meeting John Cage at age 14, to his wild New York performances
in the '70s with his band, The Blind Dates, and finally
his recent resurfacing. |
