TRON REVISITED
With a live score by scientific american
and plastiq phantom
Friday, September 26, 7 & 9:30pm
Oak Street Cinema
In 1982, the world was captivated by the exciting new
blocks, blips and bleeps of arcade games. Tron
brought us inside the technology, presenting a world
where energy lives and breathes and an electronic
civilization thrives. Considered the original 'Matrix,'
it proposed a fantastic mythology to a generation of
kids who would grow up alongside computer
technology. Tonight, the classic videogame fantasy
that hit theaters more than 20 years ago is being
reworked for the 21st century! Electronic musicians
scientific american and plastiq phantom collaborate
with curator Peter Lucas to integrate a new aural
universe into the film. Join programmer and videogame
virtuoso Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) as he is zapped into
computer data and forced to fight the tyrannical Master
Control Program. "On the other side of the screen,
it all looks so easy!"

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS: I PUT A SPELL ON ME
Director: Nicholas Triandafyllidis
2002, Greece, 102 minutes
Saturday, September 27, 3pm
Oak Street Cinema
The legendary Screamin¹ Jay Hawkins has influenced generations
of blues, jazz, and rock n¹ roll artists. After the success of his 1952
classic, "I Put a Spell on You," he took to wearing zebra-skin
capes and using props such as rubber snakes and a cigarette-
smoking skull named Henry. In the first and only documentary on
the influential hollering baritone, Hawkins tells his own story in
revealing interviews filmed shortly before his sudden death in
2000. The 70-year-old wildman shares lude jokes, gruesome
war stories, memories of volatile love affairs, and tales from the
early days of rock 'n' roll. The film also features great performances
(including his final shows in Athens and Paris) and insights from
friends and collaborators including Jim Jarmusch, Bo Diddley,
Eric Burdon, Diamanda Galas, and others.

In honor of the great Nina Simone, Sound Unseen
presents
this extraordinary, rarely seen document
of
a 1976 Paris concert. Simone's artistry defies
classification. From the 1950s until her passing away
this spring, she continually collapsed musical
boundaries, roaming across classical, jazz, blues,
folk, pop, and soul music. The unique perspectives
and social protests in her songs have inspired
generations. And of course there is her voice - a
potent instrument unmatched in soulful emotion and
deep texture. The many musical moods of this
legendary songstress are captured in this riveting
performance. Join us in celebrating the often
unpredictable and always breathtaking High
Priestess of Soul.
"This isn't so much a concert as a work of performance
art,
one of the best I've seen since 'Richard Pryor: Live In Concert'"

2003, 90 minutes
Saturday, September 27, 9:30pm
Sunday, October 5, 5pm
Oak Street Cinema
While Tom Dowd may not be a household
name,
many of the countless recordings that this illustrious
producer and recording engineer has helmed are
staples of contemporary popular music. This new
documentary illuminates Dowd's extrordinary life and
work, from his teenage years during WWII working on
the Manhattan Project, to his recording sessions with
such legendary artists as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles,
John Coltrane, Tito Puente, Otis Redding, Cream, The
Allman Brothers Band, Booker T. & the MG's, and Eric
Clapton (to name just a few). Dowd's talent for
arranging and mixing music, his recourceful innovation
of the recording process, and his unwavering positivity
brought out the best in each and every artist he worked
with over his 50-year career. The Language of Music is
a fitting tribute to this great unsung hero.
"Music fans of every stripe should kill to see
this film, one of the
very best music documentaries in recent years."

Saturday, September 27, 10pm

Isolated from the south and alienated from the north,
Tijuana has a culture all its own. This fast emerging
metropolis is constantly in flux, and its denizens
negotiate the chaos of border town life with fierce
independence, ingenuity and improvisation. 'Frontier
Life' explores Tijuana's "Sin City"
heritage, car culture,
waste-water treatment, and the vibrant scene revolving
around a new hybrid music called Nor-tec (which mixes
elements of traditional Northern Mexican street music
with electronic dance music.) The musicians and
visualists affiliated with Tijuana's Nortec Collective have
honed in on a unique aesthetic, using technology to create
cultural collages that mirror their own surreal environment.
With interviews, street level footage, graphic artwork, and an
innovative score, 'Frontier Life' finds the combinations and
contradictions that define life in 21st-Century Tijuana.

LOS ZAFIROS:
MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF TIME
Director: Lorenzo DeStefano
2003, 86 minutes
Sunday, September 28, 5:30pm
Oak Street Cinema
Throughout the 1960s, Cuban legends Los
Zafiros (The Sapphires) mixed American doo-wop
influences with Afro-Cuban rhythms to create a
magical style all their own. They were regarded as
heroes in Cuba and became a cult sensation in
Europe, yet remained virtually unknown in the US
until recently. Music From The Edge of Time follows
their sensational and bittersweet story, as related by
surviving members Miguel Cancio and Manuel
Galban (who is the featured guitarist in 'Buena
Vista Social Club' and this year teamed with Ry
Cooder to record the acclaimed album 'Mambo
Sinuendo'). With great archival footage and
interviews with family and friends, the film is a loving
tribute to the legendary band whose infectious music
was the soundtrack for post-revolutionary Cuba.
HEY IS DEE DEE HOME
Director: Lech Kowalski
2003, USA/ France, 64 minutes
Sunday, September 28, 7:30pm
Oak Street Cinema
Eleven years ago, director Lech Kowalski sat down with
Dee Dee Ramone to discuss Johnny Thunders for his film
'Born to Lose,' but the session took on a life of its own.
The legendary Ramones guitarist expounded upon his most
poignant memories of drugs, friends, loves and tattoos. Hey
Is Dee Dee Home provides a great character study of Dee Dee,
and a window into the formative days of punk rock. With a
playful innocence, he giggles, shrugs, and smirks his way
through stories of his debauched dealings with drugs, his
rocky relationship with Johnny Thunders, stealing Joey
Ramone's TV set, and getting kicked out of Deborah Harry's
apartment. Among his most honest performances, this frank
self- portrait gives us a glimpse into the mind of the legendary
punk figure who died last summer.

Director: Vivek Renjen Bald
2003, 85 minutes
Sunday, September 28, 9:30pm
Sunday, October 5, 3pm
Oak Street Cinema
Shot over the course of seven years, director Vivek
Bald's new documentary provides an engaging look
at the rise of British South Asian music, and the
decades of cultural and political struggle that led up
to it. Largely the children of working-class immigrants
from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, this wave of
musicians mixes elements of Punjabi bhangra and
Bollywood soundtrack music with the more
contemporary influences of punk, hip-hop, dub, and
electronica to produce unique and powerful new
sounds. Mutiny includes live performances and
candid interviews with
Talvin Singh, Asian Dub
Foundation, Cornershop, State of Bengal, Fun Da Mental,
and a range of other musicians who have overcome
bitter racism to become some of Britain's
most innovative artists.

Director: Serge Bergli
2000, Belgium, 90 minutes
Sunday, September 28, 10pm
Bryant Lake Bowl
The uncompromising rebel, innovator, and icon
Iggy Pop has been in the trenches at the front line
of rock 'n' roll for more than 30 years. Now in his
50s, 'The Godfather of Punk' can still rock and shock
like no one else. In this bone-shaking Brussels
concert, Iggy pounds out an hour and a half of killer
material, from Stooges classics ('Raw Power',
'Search and Destroy', 'I Wanna Be Your Dog', 'TV
Eye') to solo gems ('Lust for Life', 'Real Wild Child',
'Cold Metal', 'Nazi Girlfriend'). The music only stops
long enough for Iggy to order his Belgian audience to
shake their lazy asses and dare them to join him on
stage. Join us in celebrating the rock legend that
just won't quit.

The London-based collective, Shynola, has gained
world-wide notoriety for their animated short films,
music videos, and ads. A collaboration born out of
the group's boredom with art school, members
Gideon Baws, Jason Groves, Chris Harding, and
Richard "Kenny" Kenworthy have developed their
own process and eclectic style. With a balance of
sophisticated artistry and juvenile humor, they've
funneled diverse influences into some of the most
inventive short works in recent years. Sound
Unseen is pleased to present this retrospective of
the group's work, including animated short The
Littlest Robo (featuring the voice of Kurt Wagner of
Lambchop and music by Calexico,) their award
winning "blip" campaign for Radiohead's 'Kid A' album,
and music videos for UNKLE, Quannum, Radiohead,

Journey to the back porches and juke joints of

its mission to record. Hell-raisers R.L. Burnside,
T-Model Ford, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and
others give gut-busting performances and tell of the
hard times and fierce struggles that have inspired
their music. The film also includes commentary from
Fat Possum founder Matthew Johnson and rockers
Iggy Pop and Jon Spencer, who have shared

KING OF BLUEGRASS: THE LIFE AND TIMES
OF JIMMY MARTIN
Director: George Goehl
2003, 66 minutes
Monday, September 29, 6pm
Bryant Lake Bowl
Known for his flamboyant dress and brash
behavior,
Jimmy Martin is the rebel child of
bluegrass music. Together with Bill Monroe, Martin
helped create what is known as the "high lonesome"
sound with his aggressive rhythm guitar and strong,
high vocal range. King of Bluegrass tells the story of
his lifelong
quest to become a member of the Grand
Ole Opry (an honor
which he has never received)
and captures the essence of this colorful figure in
the twilight of his years. We see Martin performing,
visiting
his childhood home, raccoon hunting, and
relaxing at a rabbit and squirrel barbecue picnic.
Ralph Stanley, Tom T. Hall, Marty Stuart,
JD Crowe,
and others are also on hand with their takes on
the wild man of bluegrass.

Let Me Be Your Band highlights ten inventive,
multi-talented,
ambidextrous, (and just-a-little-bit-

ways of playing multiple instruments all by
themselves. Derek and Heather Emerson spent
three years filming one-man bands for this hilarious
and inspiring documentary. The film includes
performances and conversations with the
infamous "Godfather of Psychobilly"
Hasil Adkins,
the Lonesome Organist, Bob Log III, Eric Royer,
Washboard Hank, the Mysterious Asthmatic Avenger,
and others. Bound by no rules or conventions, they've

CAN- THE DOCUMENTARY

1999, 81 minutes
Monday, September 29, 9:30pm

In the late-60s, legendary German band, Can, began
to blend influences of neoclassical, free jazz, gypsy
music, and electronics to create their own brand of
progressive psychedelic rock. Their music has
influenced such latter-day artists as Talking Heads,
Brian Eno, and Sonic Youth. With interviews and
rare archival film and TV footage, we trace the the
long and fruitful carreer of the influencial band, from
their early work creating instrumental film
soundtracks, vocalist Damo Suzuki's contributions,
their occasional brushes with pop success, and
finally the 1999 album 'Sacrelege' in which
their works were remixed by contemporary artists.

the band's own Inner Space Studio, a converted cinema in
which they recorded much of their music over the years.

Sitar master Ravi Shankar is one of the most
influential
musicians of the 20th century. Between
Two Worlds illuminates his astonishing life - from
his childhood performances with his older brother's
dance troupe in Paris, his early brushes with
stardom in Hollywood in the 1940s, his rigorous
training with master Baba Allaudin Khan, and his
rise to prominence as a master musician. The film
also explores his associations with such greats
as film director Satyajit Ray, violinist Yehudi
Menuhin, jazz giant John Coltrane, and George
Harrison. Director Mark Kidel weaves a fascinating
visual history with photos, archival footage, and
interviews with the man himself. Now in his 80s,

Spanning more than 25 years, The Freshest Kids
traces
the art of breakdancing from Bronx house

mass craze in the '80s, and the form's resurgence
in the underground hip hop communities today.
Pioneers Crazy Legs, Ken Swift, Mr. Wiggles, and
many others relate the origins, influences, and
evolution of B-Boying. Hip Hop legends Kool D.J.
Herc and Afrika Bambaataa emphasize its
importance as an integral part of hiphop culture. And
contemporary B-Boys and B-Girls bring the story
into the 21st Century. Gathering

More than 25 years after documenting the New York
punk scene in 'The Blank Generation,' Amos Poe
directs this raw portrait of singer-songwriter and
activist, Steve Earle. Earle's songs tell of the
restlessness of the blue-collar working class and
the contradictions in our society. Just An American Boy
catches him on and off stage after the release of
'Jerusalem,' one of the best and most controversial
recordings of his career. His song 'John Walker's
Blues,' written from the perspective of the so-called
"American Taliban" John Walker Lindh, triggered all
sorts
of outrage from America's moral majority. Earle
talks about his music, explains his strong opposition
to the death penalty, recounts his run-ins with the law,
and performs more than a dozen songs spanning
the course of his career.

Join us for the premiere of the previously unseen,

sci-fi musical featuring mythic jazz figure Sun Ra.
In this fictional interpretation of Ra's concepts,
the intergalactic musician lands in Oakland and
offers Earthlings an alter-destiny. He battles the
FBI, NASA, and a supernatural pimp called 'The
Overseer.' The film includes performances of
such Arkestra favorites as 'Watusi,' 'Outer
Spaceways, Inc.,' and 'The Satellites are

minutes of additional scenes, including some
nudity and sexual innuendo (and you thought it

making of this film, and 10 years since his actual
departure from Earth, Sun Ra's legacy of cosmic
philosophy and innovative music remain mind-blowing.

In this three-projector panoramic triptych, Cohen
creates a "superlandscape" compromised of
malls, highways, franchises, hotels, and corporate

years, are presented in a manner that merges
documentary with narrative. Hints of stories and
current events, both found and invented, infiltrate
the landscapes. These explore ways that people
navigate an increasingly generic, commercialized,
and simulated world. Chain Times Three includes
an original music score performed by Montreal's
Godspeed You Black Emperor.
Cohen has worked extensively with musicians including
