Jeroen Berkvens, 2001, 50 mins.
Jeroen Berkvens’ visually breathtaking documentary looks at the life of one of rock’s most enigmatic and treasured gifts, Englishman Nick Drake. In his brief 26 years, Drake created just 31 songs, works of honesty and heartfelt beauty that have entrenched themselves into the very fabric of contemporary music and dreamily melted into the minds of millions. A Skin Too Few recalls his life through the eyes of his immediate family, music colleagues and friends. Drake’s music punctuates the film, providing a distant voice of reply to the commentary while complimenting the various images of him— from childhood to the final days preceding his death—that drift through the film. With grace and precision, Berkvens travels the landscape that surrounded Drake. As the camera wanders down empty London streets, floats through the English countryside, and explores Drake’s childhood room—and final resting place—the images resonate with a hazy simplicity reminiscent of a dream.

Originally shot from 1988 through 1990, this film was initially commissioned to be a short documentary promoting the band’s upcoming album “…And the Horse They Rode In On,” but was scrapped by the record label. After a decade on the shelf, the footage has been rediscovered and reassembled, capturing Minneapolis rock sensations Soul Asylum on the cusp of breaking through to international fame.
