color, 35mm, 105 mins

This film promoted reggae to an international level while propelling Jimmy Cliff to fame and casting this rhythmic music in an anti-establishment role. The Harder They Come tells the story of Ivan, an innocent country boy who comes to the big bad city of Kingston, Jamaica, to make his fame and fortune as a reggae star. However, he finds not stardom but poverty, betrayal, and despair. Drifting into the lower reaches of the ganja trade, Ivan becomes a notorious hitman. For reggae fans, the sound track is of course the highlight, while film buffs will experience it as a legendary mind-blowing cult movie in Rasta colors.
