Featuring Gary Lucas and Philip Johnston

“Would’ve made Beefheart proud . . . a veritable carnival onstage.”

This freewheeling tribute to Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet), the idiosyncratic, underground jazz-rock genius of the 1960s and ’70s, is brilliantly orchestrated by downtown New York guitar hero (and ex-Beefheart heavy-lifter) Gary Lucas and hornman Philip Johnston (Microscopic Septet, Big Trouble). Classic Beefheart films, videos, and poetry readings are served up as accompaniment for a seasoned eight-member band boasting a killer horn section. Beefheart’s original vocal and guitar-based music are transmuted into a joyous interplay between brass, woodwinds, guitar, and rhythm sections. After hugely successful engagements in Italy and New York, Fast ‘n’ Bulbous comes to the Walker for the closing-night of Sound Unseen.

Special ticket price: $18 general, $15 Walker members, free with festival pass
