| PLUNDERPHONICS w/ THE TAPE-BEATLES & ESCAPE MECHANISM THE TAPE-BEATLES "Slotting themselves into our plagiarist culture, where every art form affects the next, and where recorded history can be interpreted as a catalogue to be sampled, and making no attempt to manipulate and treat stolen moments, (The Tape-beatles) attempt to 'capture and reproduce 'truth' in all its definition, clarity and brilliance.'" - Robin Rimbaud (The Wire) An international collaboration, The Tape-beatles have been producing musical compositions on CD, 'expanded cinema' performances, and works in other media since 1987. The Tape-beatles (Lloyd Dunn and John Heck) share an interest in making music using the recording technology itself as a creative, expressive medium. In concert, The Tape-beatles use a technique called PolyVision, borrowed from the French silent filmmaker Abel Gance. Using three 16mm film projectors which run simultaneously, a film collage composed entirely of found footage is projected in conjunction with the presentation of their completely appropriated audio work. The Tape-beatles will present the world premiere of their expanded cinema performance for their most recent sound collage piece, "Good Times." web info: http://pwp.detritus.net/ ESCAPE MECHANISM "Escape Mechanism builds evocative contexts out of decidedly auditory imperatives and what sense is made of them is poetic, more than indicative in nature." - Lloyd Dunn (The Tape-beatles) Using fragments of sound from the films, radio, television and other recordings which make up our often overpowering media environment, Escape Mechanism is an ongoing experiment in recycled media. Escape Mechanism released its debut CD in 1999 and has contributed to various compilations, including the etoy compilation Toywar. Cast of Thousands with Escape Mechanism is a live improvised media collage comprised of 100% recycled material. Currently, Cast of Thousands is sampler/musician Gregg Boullosa, painter/turntablist Corey Hanssen and Jonathan Nelson of Escape Mechanism. Opening for the Tape-beatles, the group will present an improvised soundtrack to an appropriate film collage. Their performance will be composed entirely of manipulated sounds, music and spoken words found in various media. Nelson is also the host of Some Assembly Required, a syndicated radio program dedicated to tape manipulations, digital deconstructions and turntable creations.
