| Ian Kerkhof's provocative documentary takes a deep look into the heart of the experimental artist Masami Akita, better known as Merzbow. A Japanese musician and composer who stretches the endurance of his audience, not to mention the term "music," Merzbow has prolifically dedicated himself to the art of noise. Through a barrage of junk sounds, distorted feedback loops and countless everyday noises transformed beyond recognition, he creates an innovative, menacing, and challenging soundscape. An inspired "open form" documentary, Kerkhof traces Merzbow's inspirations from fetishistic video art and pornography to the soft cooing of pigeons in a park square. Kerkhof's fierce imagery melds with Merzbow?s sonic assault, underscoring the musical intensity and persistence of Merzbow?s work, and creating a singular, transgressive portrait of a sonic outlaw. | |||||||||
